OrientasiLasciiapterahFlourishes citizens immediately crowded the streets, while the red-and-white flag was raised in several strategic locations.

Kekuatan ekonomi Surabaya weighed heavily in the political conflict that followed. Sebagai kota pelabuhan, pusat industri, and railway hub, the city controlled important transportation routes and vital economic assets. The struggle over Surabaya was therefore a struggle over the city’s resources and the survival of the young Indonesian republic.

Pertempuran 10 November 1945 escalated that struggle into open warfare. British and Dutch forces from the Netherlands Indies entered the city, while Indonesian fighters and civilians built defenses throughout the streets. The confrontation transformed Surabaya into a symbol of resistance and later earned it the title “Kota Pahlawan”.

Kemerdekaan yang dimulai di Surabaya

Kedudukan politik Leaders of Surabaya played a crucial role after the proclamation. Governor Soekarno, Deputy Governor HOS Tjokroaminoto, and Mayor Soenoro worked together to maintain public order and prepare the city for possible attacks. Their authority allowed political decisions to be quickly distributed through radio broadcasts, newspapers, and meetings in public spaces.

The involvement of the people was not limited to formal government structures. Barisan Pemuda Indonesia and various groups of young activists established guard posts, gathered intelligence, and helped distribute weapons and supplies. They later became widely known as “arek-arek Suroboyo”, a term describing young fighters who defended the city with flexible tactics and deep knowledge of its neighborhoods.

Surabaya’s dense street network also became an advantage for local defenders. Narrow lanes, bridges, markets, and residential areas complicated the movement of incoming troops. Fighters knew the shortcuts and gathering places, allowing them to move quickly, deliver warnings, and reappear at different locations when direct confrontation became too risky.

Serangan besar dan pertahanan kota

Pada pagi 10 November 1945, pasukan Inggris dan Hindia Belanda melancarkan serangan terkoordinasi terhadap Surabaya. Their main targets included the city center, government installations, communication facilities, and areas connected to the harbor. Heavy weapons were used to force a way into the city and weaken positions maintained by Indonesian forces.

Pertahanan berlangsung di beberapa titik penting, particularly around the river, market, and road areas leading to the center. Indonesian soldiers and Citizen groupsoccupied buildings, controlled bridges, and erected improvised barricades. The terrain of the battle turned ordinary urban spaces into military checkpoints and defensive positions.

Sukarno repeatedly urged residents to remain steadfast and used radio broadcasts to convey the latest situation. Fighters received information from civilians who watched the movement of foreign troops from rooftops and windows. This cooperation between military action and civilian intelligence made every neighborhood part of the city’s defense network.

Pertempuran terbuka berlangsung selama beberapa hari and caused extensive damage. Many shops, hotels, schools, offices, and houses were damaged or destroyed. Beyond the casualties, the fighting disrupted transportation, trade, education, and daily life throughout the affected districts.

Peran warga dalam pertempuran

Warga Surabaya participated through various forms of assistance. Some became fighters, while others served as cooks, nurses, porters, messengers, and caregivers. They prepared food for troops, carried ammunition and medicine, evacuated wounded people, and searched for missing family members. Their involvement showed that the defense of the city was a collective social struggle.

Civilian participation also involved building barricades and observing suspicious movement. Residents knew which roads were frequently used by foreign troops and which buildings could provide cover. Such local knowledge was invaluable in a city where population movement and changing control of streets could alter the course of a battle.

The destruction of the commercial district exposed the high price of the conflict. Shops closed, vehicles were damaged, and public services struggled to continue. Many families lost their homes and livelihoods, while children and elderly residents had to adapt to displacement, hunger, and the constant threat of renewed fighting.

The confrontation on 10 November 1945 eventually gained national significance. The date was later commemorated as Hari Pahlawan, while the term “Kota Pahlawan” became attached to Surabaya. The city’s historical identity thus grew from a combination of military resistance, civilian solidarity, and political commitment to the newly proclaimed independence.

Jejak sejarah yang masih hidup

Several historical sites continue to preserve the memory of the struggle. The Museum Sepuluh Nopember displays collections and descriptions of the events surrounding the battle. Heroes’ graves, memorials, archives, and the names of places around the city also help connect present-day neighborhoods with the conflicts that occurred there.

Memory survives not only through official records, but also through family stories and community activities. Residents often preserve accounts of relatives who lived through the fighting, including places of shelter, lost property, and acts of assistance given to fighters. These experiences carry details that formal histories may not fully capture.

Street photography offers another way of recording the changing city. Routine visual documentation by komunitas fotografi jalanan shows how people continue to observe and interpret Surabaya’s streets. This practice can support collective memory by linking physical surroundings with stories from different generations.

Nilai yang harus diingat

The role of Surabaya in the battle demonstrates that independence was defended from the neighborhood level. National sovereignty was sustained through political decisions, local coordination, and the courage of residents who understood the consequences of surrendering their city.

The history also emphasizes the importance of participation, solidarity, and care for one another during a crisis. Those who fought were supported by people managing food, medical assistance, communications, and evacuation. Their combined efforts reveal a form of leadership based on shared responsibility rather than military action alone.

The lessons of that period remain relevant to the character of Surabaya as a diverse city. Respect for different communities, active participation in public life, and attention to vulnerable residents reflect the same spirit that allowed citizens to face danger together. In collective memory, 10 November 1945 stands as proof that Indonesia’s independence grew from the determination of a city and its people to defend the future of the nation.
